About Minimally Invasive Outpatient
Joint Replacement Surgery
Q. Do patients really leave the same day?
A. All of Dr. Berger’s patients are full weight bearing the same day of surgery so the majority of patients are able to walk out of the hospital the same day.
Find more information on the surgical procedure.
Q. Am I eligible for Dr. Berger’s Surgery?
A. Age, height, weight, or previous procedures do not preclude you from undergoing surgery with Dr. Berger. Dr. Berger is able to conduct surgery on anyone interested, almost without exception.
Q. What type of prosthetic is used in Minimally Invasive Surgery?
A. Dr. Berger uses the same type prosthetic which is used in standard total joint replacements; these include high flex and gender specific knee prosthetics.
Q. Is Minimally Invasive Joint Replacement Surgery right for me?
A. Dr. Berger’s minimally invasive surgery can help alleviate the pain and discomfort of arthritis. There are several surgical options for patients suffering from arthritis of the hip or knee— a consultation with Dr. Berger would allow you to discuss your surgical options or more conservative, non-surgical approaches to pain management.
Q. How can I get more information and/or schedule an appointment?
A. Please contact Andrea Sanchez at 312-432-2343 or Megan Tormey at 312-432-2557; or at mtormey@rushortho.com.
Q. Can I mail x-rays and other medical information for the doctor to review?
A. Unfortunately no, Dr. Berger needs to see and examine you prior to scheduling surgery.
Q. What is the sequence of events after I decide to schedule an appointment?
A. A total of two to five visits may be required to have the surgery performed by Dr. Berger; some of these visits can be combined for our patients who live outside the Midwest.
These visits may include:
1. An initial consultation
2. A pre operative testing and education day
3. The actual surgery, (if you are from outside the Chicagoland area you will be
required to stay locally in a hotel for two to three days following surgery)
4. 2 – 4 weeks post op
5. An annual visit which would need to be repeated every year for the rest of your life
Q. Is there a local hotel where I can stay?
A. Rush University Medical Center provides a concierge service for our out of town patients; their number is 312-942-5050.  Our office can also assist you with hotel recommendations.
Q. What insurance does Dr. Berger take?
A. Dr. Berger works with most insurance plans in order to make his surgery available to patients. He also operates on patients with Medicare Insurance, although these patients incur an additional out of pocket expense. Contact Tara to discuss how we can work with your insurance policy to make Dr. Berger’s minimally invasive hip and knee replacement surgery possible for you.
